CORE Placer Charter Student Spotlight - Kevin Winn

Kevin Winn
  • Kevin is a Senior at CORE Placer, and has been a student in Colfax since the 6th grade. In October he competed in the US Open Racquetball Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the Amateur Draw, and won second in the 24 year-old Men's Division.

  • He has been featured on the front page of the sports section of the Auburn Journal shortly after placing 2nd in the state and again when he placed 1st in the nation. At age 17, he attended the USA Racquetball National Championship Tournament in Houston, Texas where he placed first in the 24 year-old Men's Division.

  • Kevin started playing racquetball because as an 8 year old he did not like being cold! He was on a swim team and their practice pool was not heated so he decided to take up the game of racquetball instead. At first he played about once or twice a week at most. After attending his first professional match in Stockton @ age 12 he developed a more serious approach towards the game. He started practicing 5 days a week and began competing at age 14. When asked what he likes the most about the game Kevin said “The intensity of the matches and the competition. I get an adrenalin rush just walking out on the court”. Kevin also says, “CORE has helped me achieve my goals. My teachers, staff and friends here have been influential and supportive.” When Kevin is not competing or practicing he likes to play golf and tennis. He also just likes to hang out with friends.

  • Sherry Fortner, Kevin’s PLT says, “He’s a very friendly and outgoing student. He has been in the yearbook class and worked at our student store the past 2 years. In addition to staying on top of his extra-curricular activities and being and all around fun person- he maintains a high GPA.”

  • The trip to the US Open was expensive. Kevin did some fundraising for his trip by selling ice cream on a weekly basis at the Colfax Center. Colfax students were happy to support Kevin!
